There is no doubt that a lot of changes are needed in this current Celtic squad over the coming months. A number of players are expected to leave and must be replaced by new faces. After finishing 25 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership last season, there is need for significant strengthening as well.

One of the areas that was a worry for the Hoops last season was their defence. Players in the backline struggled for form and fitness throughout the course of the season, as they conceded more goals than they would have liked.

As a result, it would not be surprising to see the club bring in multiple defenders through the course of the summer. They have already signed Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday. And one more centre-back that they are being heavily linked with in recent days is Carl Starfelt.

And it looks like a move might be getting close. While speaking on The Here We Go Podcast and as reported by Celts Are Here, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said:

"“Carl Starfelt is an interesting centre-back and he’s really close to joining Celtic. They are in negotiations with Rubin Kazan. They are working to find an agreement with the player but they are confident.”"

Starfelt could be a good signing for Celtic

Starfelt had a very impressive campaign with Rubin Kazan as they finished fourth in the Russian Premier League last season with one of the defences in the league.

Starfelt could be a good fit in Ange Postecoglou’s style of football. The Swedish star is a ball-playing centre-back and his passing is very impressive to say the least, which will help in building from the back. He is also very strong when it comes to defensive duels and does not give away fouls easily. But, he might not be great aerially, and that would be a worry, especially for a defence that struggled with set-pieces in the previous campaign.

All things considered though, Starfelt could turn out to be a great addition to this team. Now, it remains to be seen if the Hoops can get a deal over the line.
