Celtic’s squad is expected to undergo a major overhaul this summer and it looks like the rebuild has already begun. The club have signed Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday, who is a centre-back but also capable of playing all across the backline.

They are not expected to stop here though when it comes to their defence. A centre-back or two could still be on Ange Postecoglou’s wish list.

One player who has emerged as a possible transfer target recently is Rubin Kazan’s Carl Starfelt. The centre-back has represented the Sweden national team on three occasions and was very impressive for his club last season as they finished fourth in the Russian Premier League, forming one of the best defences in the league in the process of doing so.

Celtic are believed to be interested in bringing Starfelt to Parkhead. As reported by the Daily Record, Rubin Kazan are understood to be looking for a transfer fee in excess of £4 million.

Starfelt could be a solid signing for Celtic this summer

Starfelt had spent his career in Sweden before moving to Russia to play for Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2019. It is safe to say that the move has been successful. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he made 31 appearances last season, scoring and assisting 3 times each.

Experience is something that the Hoops’ backline lacks at the moment. If Kristoffer Ajer was to leave this summer with just a year left on his contract, Christopher Jullien would be considered as the only senior centre-back at the club. And even he spent the majority of the previous campaign out injured.

Thus, signing someone with the experience of Starfelt might turn out to be a smart move, if the Hoops can get a deal over the line. One has to wonder though, what a move for the Swedish centre-back would mean when it comes to the potential move for Mario Vuskovic this summer.
