Celtic are expected to make a move for a striker in this summer transfer window. Finishing in front of goal was a worry for the Hoops last season, as they failed to put away their chances in a number of important games, leading to defeats or draws.

Odsonne Edouard is also expected to depart this summer, with just a year left on his current deal. The Frenchman has been their talisman and the main goalscorer for quite a few seasons now. Patryk Klimala has already left to join the New York Red Bulls. And neither Leigh Griffiths nor Albian Ajeti are coming off of a good individual season.

Thus, it would not be surprising to see the Hoops sign a new striker or two this summer as the club face a massive squad overhaul. One player that they have been linked with for a while is Charlie Wyke. But it looks like he is not going to move to Parkhead this summer.

As reported by The Northern Echo, Wyke is set to sign a £10,000-a-week deal with Wigan Athletic. Celtic were leading the race for his signature for most of the summer but the League One side are understood to have tabled the lucrative offer in the last few days.

Celtic look set to lose the Wyke transfer race

Wyke was in sensational form for Sunderland last season. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 30 goals across all competitions.

Wyke was not great in his previous two seasons at Sunderland but there is no doubting that he is brilliant in the air. And he would have brought something very different to what the Hoops already have in their squad. The 28-year-old is also available on a free transfer this summer.

It does appear that a move to Parkhead is off the table though and he is set to join Wigan Athletic. On the other hand, it looks like Celtic’s search for a new striker is set to continue for the time being.
