Left-back has been an area of worry for Celtic ever since Kieran Tierney departed for Arsenal a couple of summers ago. Since then, the club have not managed to find a regular starter at left-back.

Greg Taylor, Boli Bolingoli, Jonny Hayes and Diego Laxalt, who was on loan from AC Milan, have all got runs in the first-team over the past couple of seasons. But none of them have managed to nail down their spot at left-back.

As a result, it would not be surprising if signing a new left-back is on Ange Postecoglou’s wish list this summer. And one of the players who has been linked with the Hoops is Aaron Hickey. The 19-year-old currently plays for Serie A side Bologna.

But it looks like Celtic have been handed a blow in their chase for the left-back. As reported by La Nazione [print edition, 05/07, page 46] (via 67 Hail Hail), Bologna are not interested in a Hickey transfer exit this summer.

Hickey could be a solid signing for Celtic

Despite being just 19 years of age, Hickey already has some impressive experience of first-team football under his belt. He has already played first division football for both Hearts and Bologna.

And while he might have had his fair share of injury worries during his time at Bologna, he has appeared to grow as a player there. Thus, it is not hard to see why the Hoops might be interested in signing him.

In fact, Hickey was a part of the Celtic youth system at one point of time and the club were linked with him last summer as well before he moved to Bologna. But it looks like their interest in the left-back has not decreased since then.

A summer transfer might be unlikely though if Bologna are not interested. With Hickey’s contract believed to run till the summer of 2024, the Italian side won’t be under any pressure to let him leave. The left-back has also been linked with the likes of Napoli and Fiorentina in recent times.
