Strengthening at the back might be near the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wish list. Defence was a massive worry for Celtic last season as players all across the backline struggled for form and fitness throughout the course of the season.

Kristoffer Ajer was perhaps the only player in defence who performed on a consistent basis but he is being linked with a summer exit as well. Thus, it would not be surprising to see the club make a few signings at centre-back.

In fact, they have already made their first one by bringing in Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday. And one other young centre-back that they have appeared to have had on their radar for quite a while is Mario Vuskovic.

There appears to be a major update on the situation. Vuskovic, who has been a regular in Hajduk Split’s first-team, was left out of their game against Aris. As reported by Sportske novosti, he is preparing for the transfer to Celtic.

Vuskovic can be a brilliant signing for Celtic

Despite being just 19 years of age, Vuskovic has already established himself in Hajduk Split’s first-team. And he has featured at multiple youth levels for Croatia as well.

Thus, it goes without saying that the youngster is very highly-rated. And the fact that the Hoops appear to be prepared to shell out a big transfer fee for a player of his age just goes to show that they have a lot of belief in his talent and potential.

If Vuskovic was signed, it would be the club’s second young centre-back signing of the transfer window though. And you would have to feel that they will need to bring in some experience in the position as well.

At this moment, if Ajer was to leave, Christopher Jullein, Stephen Welsh and Osaze Urhoghide would be the only three recognised centre-backs at Parkhead and two of the three (Welsh and Urhoghide) are yet to make 50 senior appearances at club level.
