It is safe to say that Kristoffer Ajer was Celtic’s most reliable defender last season. But he could very well be looking for an exit this summer, with just a year left on his current deal with the club.

He has been with the club since 2016 but could move elsewhere this summer. As reported by Kicker, Celtic are looking for a transfer fee in the region of €15 million for Ajer.

A number of clubs have been linked with the Norwegian international in recent times, including the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Newcastle United, Norwich City and RB Leipzig. Thus, it is safe to say that there is no lack of interest in his signature.

Ajer has proven himself to be a great player during his time at Parkhead. Primarily a centre-back, he is also capable of playing at right-back and as a defensive midfielder. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 176 appearances for the club till now, scoring and assisting 7 goals each.

Ajer looks set to depart Celtic this summer with just a year left on his current deal

If Ajer does not leave the club this summer, then he would become a free agent next summer, unless the club can agree a contract extension with him.

On the other hand, the Hoops need to sign a number of players over the course of the next few months as the squad needs a massive rebuild. The transfer fee that they could potentially get for Ajer’s transfer might go a long way in that.

At this point of time, it might make sense for the Hoops to try and find a new club for Ajer. Otherwise, there is a possibility that they could end up losing him as a free agent a year later or for a much smaller transfer fee in the next January transfer window.
