Celtic need to strengthen in a number of positions over the course of the summer transfer window if they are to return to the top of Scottish football anytime soon. One of those positions is midfield.

With Scott Brown leaving the club in order to join Aberdeen in a player-coach role, the Hoops will need to bring someone in to play in the middle of the park. While Ismaila Soro is capable of playing there and put in some good displays last season, there is not much depth beyond him at this point of time.

Ali McCann has been linked with the Glasgow giants on a few occasions over the past year or so. And after winning the Cup double with St Johnstone last season, there is expected to be a lot of interest in his signature.

But it looks like McCann could be available for a transfer fee this summer, which would be considered as a bargain in modern football for a player of his quality and potential. As reported by The Scottish Sun:

"Stoke boss Michael O’Neill is keen on St Johnstone’s Northern Ireland midfielder Alistair McCann, 21.The Scottish Cup-double winners want around £1million and the Potters are trying to raise the cash.Celtic, Swansea and Hull are also interested in McCann."

McCann might be a sensational signing for Celtic

It is safe to say that McCann has shown tremendous potential during his time at St Johnstone. In crunch games for the club last season, he hardly put a foot wrong in the middle of the park and was one of the biggest reasons behind their Cup double.

Thus, McCann showed that his game already has a maturity beyond his 21 years of age and he is someone who can rise to the occasion.

Signing him for a transfer fee of around £1 million could represent a brilliant move on the part Celtic. Especially considering the fact that he might immediately come into their first-team. But there appears to be serious competition for the midfielder’s signature, with him having caught eye of clubs down South as well.
