Everyday there appears to be a new rumour about a Celtic player potentially leaving the club. And that underlines the scale of the rebuilding task which Ange Postecoglou and Dominic McKay will have to tackle over the course of the summer.

Of course, a lot of the rebuilding process could depend on the transfer fees that they will receive for the players who will leave. If, however, a player’s contract is almost up, then it would be very difficult to secure a big transfer fee.

That’s the case with Ryan Christie whose current contract with the club is set to run out in January of next year. Recent rumours do suggest that a number of clubs are interested in securing his signature but it will be difficult to get a transfer fee much higher than £1 million considering his contract situation.

The club could be open to letting him leave if that meant getting a transfer fee rather than losing him on a free transfer a few months later. Amidst all this, could another Scottish playmaker, with a year left on his current deal at this point of time, prove to be the perfect replacement if Christie was to leave?

Celtic should try to sign Ryan Gauld this summer

Gauld has been a revelation in recent years. Currently playing for Portuguese side, Farense, he had a brilliant 2020/21 campaign. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 9 goals and provided 7 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions last season.

What is even more impressive is the fact that he did it while playing for a Farense side that ended up getting relegated from the Portuguese Primeira Liga and scored 31 goals through the course of their league campaign, with Gauld having a direct contribution in more than half of their goals last season.

Considering the fact that he just has a year left on his current deal with Farense, Gauld could very well be available for a bargain transfer fee this summer. And the Hoops should definitely consider making a move for him.
