Since the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as the new Celtic manager, Mat Ryan has emerged as one of the top transfer targets for the club and it is not hard to see why.

Goalkeeper has been a position of worry for quite some time now. Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard, all got runs with the first-team gloves last season. But none of them were able to convince that they were the long-term solution between the posts for the Hoops.

As a result, it would not surprising to see the club sign a new goalkeeper over the course of the summer. And considering the history that Postecoglou shares with Ryan, he seems like the perfect signing.

Celtic have now been handed a boost in their chase to sign Ryan. For quite some time, it had looked like it was a competition between them and Arsenal for the goalkeeper’s signature. But as reported by The Sun, Ryan looks unlikely to return to Arsenal. He was with Mikel Arteta’s side on loan in the second half of last season. And while first-team opportunities were few, he did impress whenever he was on the pitch for them.

Ryan could be a great signing for Celtic this summer

When Postecoglou was the Australian national team manager, Ryan was a regular between the posts for them. Thus, he will already be accustomed with the 55-year-old’s style of football.

Ryan has proven himself in the Premier League and has great European pedigree, having represented the likes of Valencia, Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion, Club Brugge and Genk through the course of his career. And as a result, it should not take him too long to adjust to the Scottish game.

He has a year left on his current deal with Brighton & Hove Albion and as a result, could be available on a bargain transfer fee. At 29 years of age, he is also in the prime of his career and could be a starter for years to come if the Hoops are able to get a deal for him over the line.
