Signing a new striker for Celtic might very well be at the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wish list in the summer transfer window. And it is not hard to see why.

It looks like the club will be short of options up top if they don’t sign strikers in the summer. Odsonne Edouard looks set to leave the club with just a year left on his contract. Leigh Griffiths might be heading out the exit door as well as his future is up in the air at the moment. And Patryk Klimala has already left to join the New York Red Bulls.

This could leave Postecoglou with Albian Ajeti and Vakoun Issouf Bayo, who looks set to return from his loan spell at Toulouse. And it is safe to say that neither of them have shown yet that they can lead the line for the Hoops. Thus, it would not be surprising to see the club sign a striker or two over the coming months.

One man that they have been linked with heavily in recent times is Sunderland’s Charlie Wyke. He has been in brilliant form recently and scored 30 goals last season according to stats from Transfermarkt. And as reported by Football Insider, Celtic are set to offer him a long-term contract as they step up their plans to win the race for his signature.

Would Wyke be a good signing for Celtic?

It is safe to say that the move for Wyke will come with its fair share of risk. While the striker has been sensational recently, his record in the previous two seasons with Sunderland was not that impressive. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored a combined 11 goals for them over the course of the previous two campaigns, before hitting form in 2020/21.

You also have to wonder whether the 28-year-old would be able to make the jump from League One to the Scottish Premiership. Players in the past have shown that it is very possible. But that will always remain a concern whenever a player makes such a move, until proven otherwise.

But considering the fact that Wyke will be a free agent this summer, it might certainly be a risk worth taking.
