Many fans will remember how Celtic were heavily linked with Ivan Toney, who was then playing at Peterborough United, last summer. But ultimately a move failed to materialise.

Toney ended up joining Brentford instead and has been sensational since then, proving to be one of the biggest reasons behind their promotion to the Premier League from the Championship. And in hindsight, the Hoops should have definitely signed him last summer.

What is gone is gone though and the club must concentrate on what lies ahead. And what lies ahead is the difficult task of returning to the top of the Premiership while facing a transitional season.

A number of players are expected to leave the club over the course of the summer. Both Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths might be on their way out. Thus, the club might need to sign some players up front over the course of the next few months. And in this scenario, could another Peterborough United striker prove to be the answer for the Hoops?

Celtic should make move for Jonson Clarke-Harris

Peterborough United secured promotion to the Championship in the 2020/21 campaign. And Clarke-Harris is definitely one of the biggest reasons behind their success.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 33 goals and provided 3 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions last season. And it is safe to say that he did not let Peterborough United feel the absence of Toney.

As a result, there might be the opportunity for the Hoops to rectify their mistake from last summer. But it will be much more difficult this time around to make a deal happen.

On one hand, Peterborough United will be playing in the Championship next season. On the other, we have already seen how effective Toney has been since leaving the club. Thus, they will be in a much stronger negotiation position even if they decide to let Clarke-Harris leave.
