At this point of time, Ange Postecoglou is the clear favourite to be the next Celtic manager. He first emerged as a candidate after talks broke down with Eddie Howe over the role and it was a surprise to say the least.

It goes without saying that most fans were unaware of the manager’s career or achievements till now. But it is clear that he is very highly-rated everywhere that he has been over the years.

He has won titles at both club and international level (with the Australian national team). Of course, the risk for Celtic is that he has never had a top job in European football, with his only role in Europe through the course of his career being at Panachaiki back in 2008.

The rumours linking him with the Parkhead job first emerged a few days back and an appointment was expected to take place swiftly. That has not happened yet though. As reported by the Daily Record, the club will have to wait for Yokohama F. Marinos to nail down a replacement before Postecoglou is granted permission to fly to Scotland in order to complete the move.

Is Postecoglou the man for the Celtic job?

This is one of the most important appointments in the club’s recent history. The Rangers are at the top of Scottish football and won the title quite comfortably last season.

The Hoops are also facing a massive rebuild over the course of the summer, with a number of players set to leave and new faces expected to arrive in order to replace them. That rebuild has almost been put on hold though, as the club are without a manager at the moment. Thus, one would be hoping that the appointment is made as quickly as possible.

Is Postecoglou the man to get the job done? That is certainly interesting. While not in Europe, he has top level experience, having managed in the World Cup against teams like Chile Netherlands and Spain, and his Australia side did hold their own against them. He also has a clear vision regarding his style of football. And if he can make that adjustment to European football, Celtic might have just pulled off a masterstroke.
