There was plenty of speculation last summer about a potential £20 million transfer fee if Kristoffer Ajer was to leave Celtic and he was being linked with European giants like AC Milan. The player didn’t leave though, but is expected to do so this summer with just a year left on his current deal.
There have been quite a few struggles for the defence throughout the course of the season. Individually, Ajer has had his moments as well but has been one of the most consistent performers for the club this season.
He even won the club’s Players’ Player of the Year award. And he also was the one who secured the Quadruple Treble with his cool final penalty beyond Craig Gordon in the Scottish Cup win back in December.
It looks likely that he will move at some point over the summer. However, he could still play an important part in the Hoops’ season by returning from the summer break for important Champions League qualifying matches before a Parkhead exit takes place.

Newcastle United have been heavily linked with the Celtic star in recent months
As reported by the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are advancing with their £8 million move for the Celtic defender.
It’s hard to see him leaving before a replacement is signed, especially since Christopher Jullien could miss the early part of the campaign through injury. And while it may be for less than the £20 million that he was once rated at, you have to feel that the Hoops will be looking for a transfer fee higher than £8 million.
Of course, with just a year left on his current deal, things can change very quickly over the course of the next few months. But if Newcastle United turn out to be the only club interested in signing the Norwegian international over the summer, it should not come as a surprise to see him playing for The Magpies next season.
