Eddie Howe has been considered the favourite for the Celtic job for a month or so now but the appointment is yet to be made. And it is safe to say that the saga has dragged on for longer than most fans would have liked.

But now, it looks like after months of rumours and speculation, we are finally nearing the end of this saga with Howe closing in on the Parkhead job.

What has been the cause for this delay though? A few theories have been thrown around regarding this. And one of these is that the former Bournemouth manager has been waiting for an offer from a Premier League side. That does not appear to be true though.

While speaking on Graham Spiers’ Press Box Podcast and as reported by 67 Hail Hail, Stephen McGowan revealed what he has been told by someone in the Eddie Howe camp:

"“No, I don’t believe that. That’s not my information at all. I know somebody who is in the Eddie Howe camp who is quite emphatic on that point. He’s done the lower reaches of English football for a number of years.“If you remember when Gordon Strachan joined Celtic, he said he wanted to do something different. Celtic don’t choose these managers, they choose Celtic.“With Eddie Howe, the information appears to be he doesn’t particularly fancy the Crystal Palace situation. Listen, if they offer him £4m a year, I’m sure he would quickly grow accustomed to the idea, but I think he quite fancies the possibility of having a crack at Europe, challenging for titles, challenging for trophies.“When you say to people in the Eddie Howe camp he’s waiting for Palace, Brighton or Newcastle – they couldn’t be more emphatic that no, that’s not the case. That said, he clearly has a few stipulations he wants in place before he comes.”"

Howe looks set to be the next Celtic manager

It is not hard to see why someone like Howe could be interested in becoming the Celtic manager. First of all, he has already achieved some incredible things in English football.

Over his two stints at Bournemouth, he took them from the relegation zone of League Two to the Premier League and then kept them there for five straight seasons.

Now, it is very possible that he could be looking to manage a club where he will have the chance to win trophies on a consistent basis. And if that is the case, then a move to Parkhead would make the world of sense for him.

Also, we have already seen how a successful stint with the Hoops helped Brendan Rodgers get a brilliant job in the Premier League, where he is consistently competing for a top four spot right now and is also in the final of the FA Cup. Maybe that is something that attracts Howe as well.
