Not a lot of Celtic stars have managed to stand out this season amidst a difficult campaign in which the team has struggled for form, resulting in them finishing without a single piece of silverware after a long time.

Vasilis Barkas is one such player who was signed in the summer but has failed to make his mark at Parkhead this season. For quite some time now, he has been behind Scott Bain in the pecking order.

But interim manager John Kennedy has revealed that Bain has suffered an injury. As a result, it looks like Barkas will get his chance to impress in the final two matches of this season.

As reported by the Daily Record, Kennedy said:

"“He’s obviously one who we’ve had high hopes for and maybe his form didn’t quite hit the heights we expected. But again we’ve got to work on that, develop that in him.“He’s now had one year of exposure to that, he realises what the standards are.“And obviously with Scott being injured it gives him that opportunity to come in for the last two games.“He wants to finish the season well enough and then attack pre-season knowing what’s coming this time.”"

Does Barkas have a future at Celtic?

Goalkeeper has been an area of worry for the Hoops, which began when they weren’t able to bring back goalkeeper Fraser Forster. Instead, they signed Barkas from AEK Athens in a deal believed to be around £4.5 million. And to be honest, he did not seem like a bad alternative as he had both international football and Champions League pedigree.

Despite his decent record, Barkas has failed to make his mark ever since moving to Scotland. He still has yet to really be a real difference maker, like we saw from Forster on so many occasions.

As a result, he has seen Scott Bain start ahead of him for quite some time now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Barkas has made just 20 appearances for the Hoops till now.

But Bain hasn’t been great either, and has not shown enough to be considered the long-term answer between the sticks.

Looking back, perhaps the best thing would have been to keep Craig Gordon, who has already proven himself at this level.

With Barkas back in, he will likely get 90 minutes on Wednesday against St. Johnstone and another 90 minutes against Hibernian on Saturday to end the season. If he manages to perform well in those games, that should send him into the offseason with some confidence to hopefully come back next season and play well.
