Left-back is an area that Celtic need to improve in moving forward. Since Kieran Tierney moved to Arsenal in the summer of 2019, the Hoops have not been able to fill the void left behind by him.

Both Boli Bolingoli and Greg Taylor were signed, but neither of them managed to nail down their spot in the team. Diego Laxalt was brought in on a season-long loan from AC Milan this season but he has had an up and down campaign as well, and looks set to head back to the Serie A giants when the deal comes to an end. Thus, the Hoops’ search for a left-back looks set to continue.

Josh Doig is a player who they have been linked with in the recent past. And the youngster seems to be doing very well in the Premiership for Hibernian.

Doig has been named the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year for the 2020/21 season, beating the likes of David Turnbull, Nathan Patterson and Lewis Ferguson to the award. And he has been already linked with a number of big clubs including Celtic. As reported by the Daily Record, speaking about his future, the 18-year-old said:

"“It’s crazy to be linked with those clubs. I’ve grown up watching them so for any of them to show an interest is amazing.“Whatever happens, happens. But as long as I’m playing football, whether it’s here, Barcelona or Queen’s Park – that’s all I want.“I absolutely adore being at Hibs. In my first season, how I’ve been treated by the players and staff, it’s like nowhere else I’ve experienced in my life. It’s so good here.“I want to keep working hard and give everything I’ve got to the club. I’m happy and that’s all that matters.“I know Hibs can provide a great pathway to go to higher places – just look at the likes of John McGinn (who joined Aston Villa on a four-year deal) – but this is still a massive club in itself.“I don’t think there’s a better place to develop as a young player. I know in myself that I’ve come on so much.“Getting this award is amazing but I know I have to keep performing.“If I don’t, I won’t be going anywhere for the rest of my life.”"

Doig could be a good signing for Celtic

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Doig has already made 24 appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season, scoring once and providing 4 assists. That is very impressive for an 18-year-old.

Now, the challenge for Doig would be to continue on this path and keep getting better. In football, development is more about experience than age.

Kieran Tierney is a player who Doig used to idolise while growing up. Now, it remains to be seen whether the Hoops are able to sign him to be the man to fill the void of the Scottish international at left-back for them.

Judging by his comments, it feels like he has no immediate plans to leave Hibernian. But if Celtic do come in with a big transfer bid, anything could happen.
