It is safe to say that Celtic have endured one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory, if not ever. With 10IAR on the line, the Hoops lost the Premiership title race to the Rangers with six games to spare.

But that is not all. They also underwhelmed in every other competition and will be finishing the campaign without a single piece of silverware. That is very rare for the club these days, especially after completing a magnificent Quadruple Treble not too long ago.

One of the biggest reasons behind their disappointing season is the signings, either on a permanent basis or on loan, that they made last summer. Other than David Turnbull, none of them have managed to make their mark at the club till now. But things could have been very different.

As reported by Football FanCast, Frank McAvennie said that Ivan Toney was even at Celtic Park but as we know, a move ultimately failed to materialise:

"“They had him at Celtic Park. He was in at Celtic Park, that’s a fact, and they were arguing over half a million. And look at the boy now, he’s banging in goals.“He would have done wonders for Celtic.”"

Toney would have been a magnificent signing for Celtic

It is safe to say that Toney has had one of the best seasons for an individual in Championship history this time around. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 30 goals and provided 10 assists in 44 Championship appearances. Extraordinary numbers to say the least.

He was heavily linked with a move to Parkhead last summer though and appeared to be interested in the transfer himself. But ultimately, a move failed to materialise and he ended up moving to Brentford, where he has performed wonders. On the other hand, the Hoops signed Albian Ajeti, who has endured a tough debut campaign in Scottish football.

Toney moved to Brentford from Peterborough United for an initial transfer fee of £5 million which could rise to £10 million with add-ons as reported by Sky Sports. In hindsight, that is a bargain for the striker.
