Rumours and speculation have surrounded Celtic for months now. Amidst a disappointing season, Neil Lennon stepped down from his role, leaving John Kennedy in interim charge of the team.

There was a feeling that Kennedy could be handed the role on a permanent basis if he managed to turn things around and guide the Hoops to a strong finish to the season. That has not happened though and the club are now set to finish the campaign without a trophy.

As a result, a new manager is expected to arrive over the next few months with Eddie Howe looking like the favourite to be handed the Parkhead job at this point of time. Kennedy has been at the club for a long time now though and served multiple roles. And rumours had emerged recently that he could be in the running for the Director of Football role.

The interim Celtic manager has said that it has been ‘made up’ though. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:

"“Yeah, its been made up. Someone’s obviously had a guess at it!“I think because there’s so much speculation around the manager and behind the scenes, how it might look, people try to piece it together themselves and put it out there.“But I’ve not had any discussions around that role with anyone here at the club.”"

Who will be the Celtic Director of Football?

Multiple names have been linked with the role in recent months. Fergal Harkin has emerged as the favourite in recent months although others appear to be in the running as well with no appointment being made yet. But it looks like Kennedy is not one of them. At least at this point of time.

It would be surprising to see him being gone from the club completely though after remaining at Parkhead for such a long period of time. And if not in a role away from the pitch, there is a possibility that he could be a part of the backroom staff of whoever the club’s next manager turns out to be.

It remains to be seen who that man is, although Howe has emerged as a heavy favourite over the last few days and appears to be closing in on the Parkhead job.
