Celtic are expected to bring in a number of fresh faces over the course of the next few months with the club set to undergo a massive overhaul as they aim to return to the top of Scottish football once again, after a disappointing campaign in which they failed to win a trophy.

One of the areas that will need immediate reinforcements this summer is centre-back. Even as things stand, the club could do with more options in the position.

But Kristoffer Ajer, who has arguably been their most consistent defender this season, is expected to depart in the summer with just a year left on his contract at that point of time. Shane Duffy’s loan deal is also set to come to an end as well. And Christopher Jullien is expected to remain out of action with an injury for the start of the upcoming season.

Thus, a new centre-back should be high on the club’s summer wishlist. And they could have the chance to sign a highly-rated one in the form of Thomas Basila on a free transfer.

Could Celtic make summer move for Basila?

As reported by Foot Mercato (via 67 Hail Hail), Celtic are believed to have made enquiries about Basila at the start of this season but ultimately a move did not take place.

Basila was very highly-rated coming through the youth ranks but has failed to make an impact for the FC Nantes first-team. In fact, the 21-year-old has made only 13 appearances for the senior team till now according to stats from Transfermarkt.

Yet, he remains very highly-rated in France and the likes of Strasbourg, Dijon and Angers are believed to be interested in securing his services. His current contract is set to expire this summer.

Could the Hoops still be interested in the youngster as well? Only the future will tell but we all know that the club does love a good free transfer.
