Celtic have failed to make it to the group stage of the Champions League for the previous three seasons as they have struggled in the qualification phase of the competition. But there could be a massive boost on the horizon in this regard for the Hoops.

The last two days have been like no other in the history of football. First, it emerged that 12 of the biggest clubs in the world were looking to create a European Super League of their own.

It was set to be a 20-team but most of the spots were guaranteed for the founding members. Understandably, it did not go down well with football fans all over the world and ultimately, all six English clubs involved in the idea decided to withdraw from the competition and it was suspended.

The whole incident has also brought to the front, issues with the Champions League format, which is also set to undergo a change in the near future.

Celtic could be set for a Champions League boost in the future

It was believed that there would be extra guaranteed spots in the Champions League in the revised format which would be handed to clubs based on their historical performances in the competition over the past five years.

But now there is a feeling that it should be given to the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Ajax for winning their respective leagues instead. As reported by The Times (via 67 Hail Hail):

"“Uefa is set to be hit with a concerted campaign to drop its plan for two Champions League places awarded on the basis of historical performances in Europe.“One [European Clubs Association] board member told The Times that there was a strong feeling that the extra guaranteed places should be given to the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Ajax for winning their respective leagues rather than handed to the elite clubs based on historical performances over the previous five years.”"

If that ends up being the case, then it would be a massive boost for a club like Celtic who would not have to go through an incredibly tough qualification phase to make it to the competition despite winning their league.

And at the end of the day, you have to feel that it would be good for the competition as these clubs have a huge following all over the world as well as a lot of history in Europe.
