It has been an incredible couple of days in the world of football. Although the Celtic managerial saga continues to drag on, the news regarding the European Super League looked to have brought together fans from all clubs.
The competition was supposed to have 15 founding members who would have a guaranteed spot every season, while 5 other places were available and would be based on clubs’ performances from the previous season.
12 of the biggest clubs in the world made it known that they wanted to be a part of the competition and 3 more founding members were expected to come in. But at this point of time, it looks very unlikely that the competition will happen. As reported by the BBC, all six English clubs have withdrawn from the competition.
And according to rumours, a few of the other teams are set to do the same. As a result, it is hard to see the tournament happening at this point of time. Fabrizio Romano tweeted out that the Super League is set to be ‘suspended’:
The #SuperLeague is set to be suspended soon, confirmed. 🚨🚫

Legal team at work on this point but waiting for Italian and Spanish clubs position, after English clubs leaving the league in the last hours the whole project is expected to be ‘suspended’ as per @tariqpanja.

What does it mean for Celtic?
First of all, could Celtic have been invited to the Super League? Who knows? The club certainly does have an incredible fanbase all around the world which would make it an attractive option. But in our opinion, they should not have competed in a competition that would have increased the gulf between the top teams and the rest even further.
Secondly, for years, there have been rumours about an Atlantic League, which would help clubs struggling to compete, especially financially, with the top teams from the Big Five leagues.
But after seeing the reaction of the fans to the proposed Super League, what chances are there of an Atlantic League happening anytime in the near future?
Even if it did end up happening, the Hoops did not seem too keen on joining it in the first place though. But if all of this over the past couple of days has made anything clear, it is that football is and needs to remain a competitive sport.
