A number of changes are set to take place at Celtic, both on and off the field, over the course of the next several months as the club aim to return to challenging for titles as soon as possible.

While a new manager and new players are expected to come in, rumours have suggested that the club are looking for a Director of Football as well. And one man who has been heavily linked with the role is Fergal Harkin.

Harkin is currently the Football Partnerships and Pathways Manager at Manchester City and it was believed that he could be on his way to Parkhead soon to become the club’s Director of Football.

There has been some doubt regarding the situation in recent weeks though after it emerged that Eddie Howe, who is a managerial target for Celtic, wants to bring Richard Hughes, the current Bournemouth technical director, to the club. This has naturally raised questions about the Harkin situation. But when Alan Nixon was asked about it on Twitter, he responded that the move is still ‘alive and kicking’:

What could Harkin to Celtic mean for the Howe move?

While there has been a lot of confusion around the situation, there is no reason that both Harkin and Hughes could not arrive at the club next season. We have to remember that Nick Hammond also stepped down from his role as Head of Football Operations recently, and that could be a position that Hughes might fill if he does arrive.

Also, the entire Hughes situation depends on Howe. And if he is not appointed the club’s manager, it is unlikely that the Hoops will go after the Bournemouth technical director.

Of course, there could also be the scenario where the Howe appointment is made even without Hughes coming in. One thing is for sure, the club needs to make all these appointments as soon as possible so that they can start preparing for the upcoming season.
