A couple of days ago, there was the feeling that Eddie Howe was destined to appointed the next manager of Celtic. But at this point of time, nobody appears to be as sure of that happening anymore though. In fact, there is a growing fear among the club’s fans that the move might not take place.

Howe has a huge reputation in England, having guided Bournemouth from the relegation zone of League Two to the Premier League in a relatively short span of time.

As a result, he has been linked with many Premier League sides as well as the England national team in the past. Thus, it goes without saying that appointing someone of his pedigree would be considered as a major coup on the part of the Hoops.

While speaking with Football Insider, Frank McAvennie said that he doesn’t think Howe will come:

"“I don’t think he’ll [Howe] come now, I thought he would’ve got it by now.”"

He also revealed that he has been told that Richard Hughes doesn’t want to make the move:

"“From what I’m told he’s wanting a director of football and I don’t think Hughes wants to come back up here from Bournemouth.“I know he’s from here, he’s a Celtic supporter but I don’t think he wants to bring his kids up here.“That’s the problem but at the moment it doesn’t look to me like it’s going to happen.”"

Could a move to Celtic be off for Howe?

It was believed that a move was close to taking place and could even be announced as early as next week. That was thrown into doubt though after Sami Mokbel tweeted out comments from Howe’s representative which suggested talks about any deal being close were premature:

Of course, this does not mean that a move to Parkhead is completely off the table for Howe. It just means that he might not be keen to take over at a club near the end of the season and instead wants a fresh start in the summer.

But all of this news has certainly put the move in doubt, just days after it had looked like Celtic had got their man. Now, it will be a waiting game to see what happens.

One thing is for sure though, missing out on Howe would be a massive blow if it does indeed happen. There is no doubt that he is a great manager who can help the club return to the top of the Scottish game once again. But if it does look like the move might not happen, the Hoops must be prepared to go after alternatives.
