Uncertainty over a new manager at Celtic means that some player moves may be on hold for now. But there are other matters which won’t wait and decisions might be needed to be taken soon in some cases.

One of these decisions that needs to be made soon involves the contract situation of Leigh Griffiths. It looks like the long-time player is waiting on a decision regarding a contract extension.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, there is a one-year option in his contract which if taken by the Hoops will extend his stay at the club till the summer of 2022 and if the option is not taken up by April 30, then he could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Whatever the outcome, the fans are likely to be split in their view of the situation. On one hand, Griffiths has not been anywhere near his best this season but on the other, Odsonne Edouard is expected to leave in the summer and neither Albian Ajeti nor Patryk Klimala have looked very convincing.

Should Celtic try to keep Griffiths?

Hibernian might be interested in the striker as could be Aberdeen, where Scott Brown will be a player-coach next season and he of course knows all about Griffiths’ goal scoring abilities.

On top his game, he can be a prolific goal scorer and would be an attractive proposition for many clubs. From a Celtic perspective offering a contract extension is a bit of a risk though as there may not be input available from a new manager or director of football as these positions are still being decided.

What is clear though is that the Hoops will need to sign more strikers in the upcoming summer transfer window. With Edouard a likely departure and Klimala being linked with a loan move as well, there’s definitely a gap someone with a scoring record like Griffiths can fill.

The strikers the club have signed over the past several transfer windows have failed to make their mark at Parkhead. We all know what we are getting with Griffiths though if he is on form and it makes a lot of sense to give a one-year extension to him, especially considering the circumstances.
