After months of speculation and rumours, it does feel like Celtic are finally close to appointing their next manager. Eddie Howe is the heavy favourite for the role right now and some rumours suggest that an official announcement might be made as early as next week.

And if the appointment is indeed made, it is safe to say that the majority of the fans will be happy. Howe is someone who did a brilliant job at Bournemouth, taking them from the relegation zone of League Two to the Premier League and kept them in the top flight of English football for five straight seasons.

As a result, he will come with a big reputation. But the big question right now is – is he the right man for the job?

Kevin Phillips has pointed out that if he did move to Parkhead, he will now be managing a club that are not the underdogs. That is something that he has not done in the past and he believes it will be a big challenge for him. While speaking with Football Insider, he said:

"“The style of play you’ll get is that attractive football.“Ultimately, he’s shown with what he did at Bournemouth but obviously he struggled when he went to Burnley so there’s a bit of history there. It’s not all plain sailing, he struggled.“It’s a big challenge for him if he was to go there, I’m sure funds would be made available.“Over the years, we’ve watched Bournemouth play some really good stuff but they’ve always been the underdogs haven’t they?“He’s going to a club now where they aren’t an underdog, they’re expected to win every week and some managers adapt to that.“It’s a big decision for the club but Howe would be a popular appointment.”"

Is Howe the man for the Celtic job?

At the end of the day, there will be pros and cons to every manager. But out of all the managers that Celtic have been linked with over the past several months, Howe is certainly one of the most exciting.

His sides are known to play attacking football, which is a massive bonus for any manager who takes the Parkhead job. Winning is going to be the most important part of it though.

Yes, it is true that he has never managed at a club where his team are expected to win almost every game and it will be interesting to see how he makes that adjustment. But if the Hoops manage to make the appointment, it should be viewed as a major coup for the club.
