Sometimes, things just don’t work out for certain players at Celtic. We have seen it happen numerous times in the past. It is hard to judge when it is the right time to let a player leave though.

Last summer, after much speculation over Fraser Forster, The Hoops shelled out a £4.5 million transfer fee to sign Greek international Vasilis Barkas from AEK Athens. At the time it looked like a decent signing to be honest.

He came with a good pedigree and his achievements before moving to Parkhead did suggest that he could be a regular in the first-team for years to come. After all, he has made 13 appearances for the Greece national team.

Things have not turned out quite that way though. When playing, Barkas has failed to nail down a spot in the starting XI. At the moment, he is behind Scott Bain in the selection order and it’s hard to see him feature many more times this season.

Should he stay at Celtic or should he leave?

While he might not have performed to the best of his abilities this season, there does not seem to be a lack of interest for Barkas. The Hoops are believed to have already pushed back a loan approach from his former club, AEK Athens.

As reported by the Daily Record there is further interest in him from Greece, as PAOK, currently sitting at third in Super League Greece, are also weighing up a loan move for him.

There is still hope that Barkas could turn things around at Parkhead though and ultimately establish himself in the first-team.

That could begin with the arrival of a new manager over the next couple of months. Hopefully, everybody will start with a clean slate then and that could allow Barkas the chance to show why the Hoops decided to sign him for £4.5 million just last summer.
