It will truly be the end of an era at Celtic at the end of this season. Not only did the club fail to win a historic 10IAR, Scott Brown is set to leave the club as well and will join Aberdeen in a player-coach role.

Brown enjoyed a spectacular 14-year long career at Parkhead, lifting one trophy after another. During his time at the club, he made over 600 appearances and won 22 trophies.

Incredible achievements and more than anybody could have expected when he joined the club back in 2007 from Hibernian. Now, the difficult task for the Hoops will be to replace the long-term captain of the club.

One man who worked very successfully alongside Brown during his time at Parkhead was Brendan Rodgers. It is arguably the best football that the club produced over the course of this incredible run. And the current Leicester City manager believes that Callum McGregor is the man who should take over the captain’s armband next. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:

"“I think Callum is the natural successor to Scott. He has different qualities and strengths.“But he loves the club and knows what it takes to play for and be successful for Celtic.“He’s the guy to naturally take over.”"

McGregor looks likely to be the next Celtic captain

McGregor is currently the club’s vice-captain and looks likely to take over the armband from the departing Brown from next season.

The 27-year-old is one of the most consistent players at the club right now and it only makes sense for him to be handed the responsibility. Yes, he has been linked with a Parkhead exit in the past but at the moment it looks likely that he will remain here for a long time.

As a leader, he will probably be different to Brown. But at the end of the day, it is almost impossible to replace a character like the outgoing captain. He is truly one of a kind.

But all great things must come to an end and so will his time at the club at the end of the current season. We can only hope that it turns out to be a happy ending with the Hoops winning the Scottish Cup.
