Celtic find themselves in a tricky situation right now. The club are expected to make a lot of changes over the next few months. But they also have to aim to win the Premiership title back from the Rangers as quickly as possible, after losing the title race with six games to spare this time around.
A new manager is expected to be appointed unless things improve drastically under John Kennedy over the next couple of months. And with a number of players believed to be headed for the exit door, new faces are expected to arrive at Parkhead to replace them.
But before all this happens, it looks like the club could appoint a Director of Football. According to Football Insider, Celtic are closing in on Fergal Harkin for the role.
And Danny Mills appears to agree with the club’s decision to bring in a Director of Football before a new manager. While speaking with Football Insider, he said:
"“Yes.“Director of football is the old-school chief-executive. They’re involved in transfers, involved in contracts, talking to scouts about who they’re going to sign.“Football is such a big business, it’s global. You need that.“He then organises the coaches, he then organises recruitment and puts all these people in place.“The owners and chairman are off doing what they’re doing. They’ve got lives to lead. So the director of football is effectively running the football club and is putting in all the right people.“He’s basically the CEO of a company. It’s a massive appointment.”"

Celtic are taking a massive step in the right direction
The role of Director of Football has grown in prominence in recent years to the point where most top clubs appear to have one. Thus, it is certainly a right decision and a statement of intent on the part of the Hoops to appoint one.
Harkin will come, if he does indeed come, with a big reputation and could certainly do a great job at Parkhead. The club will be hoping that his experience of working as the Football Partnerships and Pathways Manager at one of the biggest clubs in the world, Manchester City, will help him in his new role as well.
It is definitely a massive appointment on the part of Celtic and one that will have a huge impact on the club going forward. Other than Harkin, names like Matteo Tognozzi and David Webb have been linked with the role as well. And we can only hope that whoever ends up coming, is able to guide the club to the next level.
