Celtic’s recent transfer recruitment has left a lot to be desired. A number of players have been signed who have not made an impact after arriving at the club, which is a massive reason behind their failure to lift 10IAR this season.

One signing that did raise a lot of interest though was that of Maryan Shved. The Ukrainian winger was brought in from Karpaty Lviv after an incredible season in which he scored 15 goals and provided 4 assists in just 26 appearances. The talent was there for all to see.

After joining Celtic, things did not go his way though. He was afforded just 40 minutes of football through the course of 2019/20 season, although he did find the back of the net once even in that short period of time.

It looked like he had failed to settle in at the club and was sent on loan to Belgian side KV Mechelen. And after a rough start there which saw his manager criticise his attitude in public, Shved has made an incredible turnaround and is now a regular member of the team.

The Celtic loanee has talked about his turnaround at KV Mechelen

Not too long ago, it looked like Shved was on his way out of the Belgian side. But ever since his turnaround, the Ukrainian winger has scored 4 goals and provided an assist as well in 14 appearances for KV Mechelen.

And talking with Nieuwsblad (as cited by 67 Hail Hail), he said:

"“When manager Wouter Vrancken gave an interview in early December in which harsh words were said about me, I changed my mentality. It motivated me and suddenly I felt that I could make a difference here. I trained harder and thus gained the coach’s confidence.“I suddenly gave 100 percent on every sprint and went 100 percent for every ball. That made a big difference.“That gave me more chances to play and even more motivation. Now we play the quarter finals of the cup and we have a view of the play-offs, which motivates me even more.”"

It is great to see that kind of an attitude from Shved and clearly the manager’s words did an incredible job to get the best out of him. If Celtic do not let him go on a permanent basis at the end of his loan spell, he could still make his mark at Parkhead.

After all, he was given just 3 substitute appearances in his first season at the club, which is hardly enough for a player to find his feet. But under a new manager, he could very well be an important part of The Hoops’ first-team.

At the end of the day, the club do need another right-winger. And it would be better to give Shved a chance to stake his claim for the position than to bring someone new in for a significant transfer fee, especially when they need to strengthen in multiple other positions as well.
