Celtic are expected to bring in a new manager in the summer after Neil Lennon stepped down from his role a week or so ago and at the moment, John Kennedy is serving as the interim manager of the club.

And one man that appears to be on The Hoops’ radar when it comes to being their next manager is Stoke City’s Michael O’Neill, as reported by Give Me Sport. The Northern Irishman was previously linked with the Parkhead job in 2016, with his footballing background and achievements within the game viewed as appealing to the club.

Undoubtedly, the 51-year-old is best renowned for his spell in charge of Northern Ireland in which he led them to their first ever European Championships in 2016. He is currently in charge of Stoke City in the English Championship and Celtic would be hoping that they can convince him to move to Parkhead

Notably, his profile is enhanced further by the fact that he featured as a player in Scotland with the likes of Dundee United, Hibernian and Aberdeen. As a result, he knows the Scottish game very well and that is something that the Hoops board would surely be considering when appointing their next manager.

Would O’Neill be the right choice on the part of Celtic?

The Portadown-born man also served as the manager of Brechin City and Shamrock Rovers, before establishing himself in international football with his country.

Despite his relative success, he would not be the blockbuster appointment that most fans would be hoping that the club make this summer. One must also note the fact that he has not managed at a club that is expected to always come out of the season as champions.

However, it is not always about the most glamourous appointment but the one that is most effective. And O’Neill has shown in the past that he can get the job done even when the odds are stacked against him.
