There always seems to be a full back gap to fill for Celtic, especially so for next season with Jeremie Frimpong having left in January and current loan spells coming to an end at the end of the campaign.

Frequent rumours have persisted for a long time about signing full backs and a number of names have been linked with a Parkhead switch. The latest is potentially quite exciting.

According to The Scotsman, reports have emerged from Netherlands about the Hoops being very interested in ADO Den Haag’s 20-year-old right-back, Milan van Ewijk. He could be a prospective replacement for Jonjoe Kenny, who himself was brought in on loan till the end of the season from Everton after Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed departed in January.

Of course, at 20 years of age, there will be questions whether he can be a regular starter for a club the size of Celtic. In many ways, he would be similar to Frimpong, who broke through to the first-team as a young, energetic but raw player. He had electrifying pace and ability to get forward, but there were question marks about the defensive side of his game and his final ball as well. Similarly, Van Ewijk’s game is expected to have its own shortcomings at this stage of his career.

Celtic will have competition for the Dutch right-back

Van Ewijk has a bit more experience than Frimpong when he joined the Hoops. He has played 25 games with ADO Den Haag this season notching up a goal and a couple of assists. And his performances seem to have caught the eye of multiple clubs around Europe.

There is reported interest from several German clubs including Hamburg and Schalke plus Belgium’s Gent, alongside the Hoops. His contract with the Dutch side runs out in the summer of 2022. For the time being, he seems to be focused on ADO Den Haag and helping them move out of the relegation zone.

While talking with Dutch outlet VI, his agent said:

"“’We have drawn up a step-by-step plan to make the best choices in his early but promising career. We are sticking to that.”"

But his next step might very well turn out to be a move to Parkhead to play for Celtic. After all, such an opportunity does not come knocking every day.
