After a poor season that has seen Celtic almost hand the Premiership title to the Rangers, Neil Lennon decided to step down from his role as manager following a 1-0 defeat to then bottom-placed Ross County. And John Kennedy was given the role on an interim basis in order to fill the void.

While one cannot completely count out the possibility of him being given the role on a permanent basis if results and performances improve drastically over the next couple of months, it is expected though that the club will go after a new manager in the summer when Dominic McKay replaces Peter Lawwell.

A number of high-profile names have been linked with the Hoops in recent months including the likes of Eddie Howe, Rafa Benitez, Frank Lampard and Roberto Martinez among many others. Although, there have also been fears that the club could end up appointing someone who is not the right fit.

Kenny Dalglish does not seem to have those same fears about his former club though. In his column in The Sunday Post, he wrote:

"Around a dozen names have been linked with the manager’s job. At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be a clear front-runner in the eyes of the supporters and the media.Dermot Desmond is very much keeping his cards close to his chest and that’s the way it should be.I’m not privy as to who will be Neil’s replacement. But I do know that it will be a person of the highest calibre available."

Celtic will need a top level manager to challenge for the title next season

Despite dominating Scottish football for almost a decade, it does feel like the Hoops are a long way behind the Rangers at the moment despite just one poor season. In reality, a number of players are expected to leave in the summer and the board have a huge task on their hand to rebuild this team while remaining competitive at the same time.

This makes the appointment of a top level manager even more important. They need someone who can help with the transition and challenge for the title even in the midst of it. Someone like Benitez or Howe.

Otherwise, it might give Steven Gerrard’s side to win a title or two more before Celtic are competitive once again. And that is the last thing fans will want.
