In a tough season for Celtic where an astonishing run of trophies has now come to an end, there are still glimmers of hope that some success can still be salvaged. They won’t compensate for the poor campaign, but may help ease the pain.
The League cup is the first trophy officially to go to another club in Scotland after 4 seasons of Celtic dominance and almost 5 calendar years or 4 years 9 months and 8 days to be exact. Congratulations to St Johnstone.
With that trophy gone, who knows what the position will be regarding the Scottish Cup. If it can be reintroduced into the fixture list then Celtic will surely want to put every effort into securing it again. Whatever else has happened, it would still count as a success. Somewhat oddly it could be the first time the Scottish Cup is won twice in the same season!
We know the league is most likely to be the next trophy to be officially lost. And that will hurt. Maybe we can see the Hoops delay that pain slightly and gain a little joy and some limited success along the way. The clash between the two Glasgow giants at Parkhead on 21st March becomes very critical.
Celtic must avoid losing the title at Parkhead
Subject to other results, it’s currently where the Rangers could clinch the title. That’s not something the Hoops fans or players will want to happen on their home pitch. A win to slow the title being awarded would indeed be very welcome.

Is it possible? Certainly, despite some below par performances during the season there is definitely a good chance of a win to cheer the fans for a short while at least. If John Kennedy can use the next 3 weeks to organise a better defensive structure and formation, then a win could be possible.
He has time and opportunity to do so with a quieter fixture period approaching and only the match away to Dundee United on 7th March to play before the home Glasgow Derby.
The Rangers on the other hand get a taste of the pressure Celtic have faced on their extraordinary run of four trebles in successive seasons. Games come at you fast and become increasingly important.
Steven Gerrard’s side will have to face Livingston and St Mirren in league matches and a home and away pair of ties against Slavia Prague in the Europa League before travelling to Parkhead 3 days after their last match. The heat will be on them and that pressure helps gives the Hoops additional opportunity.
As with the Scottish Cup, a win at that Glasgow Derby won’t change a disappointing season. It’s highly unlikely to change the outcome for the league. But it sure would bring a few smiles to faces along the way.
