With Neil Lennon stepping down as Celtic manager after their 1-0 defeat at the hands of then bottom-placed Ross County, John Kennedy was made the interim boss. But it is expected that the club will bring in someone to be the permanent manager.

According to Football Insider, former Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy is reportedly on the shortlist to be the next manager at Parkhead.

Interestingly, the 62-year-old is currently in charge of Cardiff City in the English Championship and his contract is scheduled to expire at the end of the season. His vast experience in football, alongside his possible availability could put the Hoops board on alert.

Of course, the Irishman also has a connection with the club due to playing for them between the years of 1987 to 1989. Conceivably, his personal relationship with the Hoops may favour him as the club have appointed multiple former players as manager over the years.

Could Mick McCarthy be the one for the Celtic job?

Imperatively, Celtic would not need to pay any reimbursement fee to Cardiff City as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season unless he reaches an extension. And it is probable that he will be open to a Parkhead move as well.

Despite being a popular figure amongst the Hoops’ support, he would not be an exciting choice to take over the managerial role at Parkhead. And at this stage of his career, it would be a short-term fix as well, which may set them back even further in terms of the progression of the club.

Going into 2021/22, a change from top to bottom is needed at Parkhead to ensure the return of consistent success on both domestic and European fronts. And with names like Eddie Howe, Rafa Benitez and Roberto Martinez being linked with the club, McCarthy would be an underwhelming choice.
