After months of disappointing results, Neil Lennon has stepped down as Celtic manager. That leaves a massive hole in the club, which is currently being filled by interim manager John Kennedy.

Eddie Howe and Steve Clarke are the top two names that many throw around when talking about the next manager. Names like Rafa Benitez, Frank Lampard and Roberto Martinez are doing the rounds as well, along with a number of others.

While all of them have good cases, John Collins has mentioned another. And it is an interesting one for sure, which should be considered.

When speaking with Talksport and as reported by The Scottish Sun, he said:

"“The names in hat include Robbie Martinez, who’s a very similar style of manager to Brendan Rodgers – his teams play attacking football on the deck.“Eddie Howe – no matter what anybody says, the job he did at Bournemouth was outstanding. He came up against the big boys trying to play good football and being creative. He’s proved he can make players better.“But a name I’d throw in the hat would be Jesse Marsch, the American at Red Bull Salzburg. Sometimes you see a team in the Champions League turn in a performance that sticks in your mind.”"

Marsch could be the perfect man for the Celtic role

That is not a bad idea at all. Marsch, who won three MLS Cups over the course of his 14-year playing career, has quickly made a name for himself as a coach. In his first season as manager of the New York Red Bulls, he won the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Coach of the Year.

The Wisconsin native joined Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2019, where he won the Austrian Bundesliga and Austrian Cup in his first season and has impressed in the Champions League as well.

Celtic need to go after a manager who can help produce attacking, entertaining football, which fans will be looking for. He did suggest that he would like the club to get someone like Roberto Martinez, Eddie Howe or Jesse Marsch.

Collins did make some great points about each candidate and Celtic’s need for an attacking manager. Marsch is one who hasn’t gotten too much thought when it comes to the vacant role, but he is a manager who can certainly do a great job at Parkhead.

He gave Erling Haaland his first opportunity at RB Salzburg, and now he is scoring for fun in Germany and Europe. Marsch is a proven winner that plays some of the most exciting football in Europe and is a coach that has an eye for a good player, which is something that the Hoops could do with after their poor recruitment in recent years.

It may be difficult to lure him away from his current project with RB Salzburg, but it is certainly worth trying.
