With poor results, performances and a declining team, hard realities start to hit home. Even with a new manager there are signs that any success for Celtic next season may be strongly impacted by Steven Gerrard’s approach.

Celtic used to lead the race and win the trophies not too long ago. But after this dramatic and poor season the club are now becoming followers with others gaining an upper hand. The plan was to secure 10IAR, assuming that would have a significant impact on the opposition in terms of morale, ambition and in particular finances. And the future would take care of itself.

The Hoops now find themselves in a terrible spot though, with virtually nothing to play for this season anymore. And with a temporary manager until the end of the season it’s unclear what happens next.

Over at Ibrox, Gerrard’s squad may not be world class but they are well organised and working hard for each other. The league is not yet mathematically assured but the Hoops continue to help with the number of remaining points needed over at Ibrox to secure it. The Rangers could be in a strong position going into the next season as well.

Celtic will undergo a massive overhaul over the next few months

Celtic, on the other hand, have a huge rebuilding task at team, managerial, coaching and executive levels. That’s going to be an enormous challenge to make it all work successfully and at pace in a single season. Apart from behind the scenes changes, there are so many on the pitch moves away likely and loans ending which will all lead to quite a transformation in players alone.

We shouldn’t be asking what the opposition will do, it shouldn’t matter. But it will make a difference. Would Gerrard decide that breaking through the trophyless run of the club be as good as it gets when it comes to his time at Ibrox? Would he look to draw a line and move on to the English Premier League sooner rather than later? It may depend on what opportunities arise there.

It’s still unlikely that he would be Klopp’s successor at Liverpool, Gerrard’s coaching and managerial record may not be seen as sufficient there, yet. But you never know and after a disappointing season for the Reds, The German manager may yet move on sooner than expected.

Some of the media coverage on Gerrard’s abilities may be a bit over the top. But whether it’s Liverpool or more likely elsewhere, opportunities will arise and be offered to him.

If he stays, the Ibrox squad will be settled, strengthened and rejuvenated. If he moves on then it’s more likely to break up to some extent and suffer from any change in management and background team.

It’s incredibly sad that Celtic may need that extra help from an opposition to deliver any success next season. The downward spiral has gone on too long this season and a change to management now is still way too late. Meaning it’s all the more important for the Hoops to get their act together and start preparing for the future. We have some signs of action now and that is a positive.
