Yes, Brendan Rodgers could have timed his Celtic exit much better. The manager ended up leaving the club in the middle of the season to take over Leicester City in the Premier League.

While events since then might not have convinced fans to forgive the manner of his departure, at least most can understand the reason behind it. The Hoops have not managed to qualify for the Champions League for three straight seasons now and find themselves convincingly behind the Rangers in the Premiership this season.

While Neil Lennon and the players deserve their fair share of the blame for that, it also cannot be denied that the board are not blameless either and the recruitment has been questionable at best over the past several seasons.

Now, Rodgers has some advice for the club moving forward. And it involves the appointment of a director of football. As reported by the Glasgow Times, he said:

"“At the highest level, in particular, it’s a role which is very important. I think in the modern game, it’s absolutely critical to have that. Obviously the manager has to be able to bring in players he wants because he’s accountable for what happens on the pitch. I’m pretty sure that’s something Celtic may be looking at.”"

Celtic are reportedly looking for a director of football

The position of a director of football has grown in prominence in recent years. While managers still have their say when it comes to transfer acquisitions and departures, at a number of top clubs, it is the board and the recruitment who end up making the final decisions. A director of football serves as the link between the manager and the club’s chief executive.

A number of high profile names like Matteo Tognozzi, Fergal Harkin and David Webb have been linked with the Hoops in recent months. And it is believed that incoming Chief Executive Dominic McKay will look to appoint a director of football upon arrival.

The club are making a massive overhaul at all levels over the next few months and one of the most successful eras in their history comes to an end. And it will be upto the likes of McKay to make the transition smooth and as rapid as possible.
