Celtic are set to undergo an overhaul in the upcoming summer after having suffered an incredibly disappointing campaign both on and off the pitch. A number of players are set to leave the club and Neil Lennon will most probably be shown the exit door as well. And changes are set to be made behind the scenes as well.

Peter Lawwell will retire from his role and will be replaced by Dominic McKay, and the incoming Chief Executive apparently wants to bring in a sporting director, which will change the structure of how the club is run at the moment. Juventus chief scout Matteo Tognozzi has been earmarked for the role by Celtic and it is not hard to see why.

While the club has struggled in the transfer market over the past few years, Tognozzi has been very instrumental in Juventus becoming one of the primary forces in Europe despite not operating at a budget as high as certain Premier League clubs or the likes of FC Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Other than Juventus, he has also worked for the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Zenit St. Petersburg and Hamburg in the past, showing that he is used to working with different types of clubs and adapting to their ways. Clearly, he would be a good choice for the role of a sporting director but Celtic might have some very tough competition for his signature.

Manchester United might rival Celtic for Tognozzi

It is safe to say that the Hoops are not the only admirers of Juventus’ chief scout. Premier League giants Manchester United are also interested in making him their sporting director, as reported by the Express.

And if it did come down between Celtic and Manchester United, Tognozzi cannot be blamed for picking the latter. At Old Trafford, he will have one of the biggest budgets in all of football to work with and a much better chance of succeeding on the European stage.

Fortunately, he is not the only name who has been linked with the Hoops in recent months with regards to the role of a sporting director. Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin and former Tottenham Hotspur man David Webb are also in the running for the role.
