Celtic were agonisingly close to agreeing a pre-contract deal with Ben Davies which would have seen him move to Parkhead in the summer when his contract with Preston North End came to an end. A number of fans wanted the club to sign him outright with the centre-back crisis outright but the Hoops decided against it. And ultimately, it ended up costing them.

While a pre-contract agreement was close, it had not been signed yet, which left the door open for Liverpool to come in at the last minute and hijack the deal.

As a result, he completed a move to Anfield in January, leaving the Hoops empty-handed and thinking what could’ve been. But a summer move might not be completely off the cards if recent events are anything to go by.

Jordan Henderson got injured during the game against Everton and was forced to come off. But instead of bringing on Davies, who was on the bench, Jurgen Klopp decided to go for Nathaniel Phillips. That just shows where the former Preston North End man is currently on the pecking order.

Celtic should try to make a move for Davies in the summer

At this point, it does look like Davies was a panic buy on the end of Liverpool and not someone that they have long-term plans for. Just a take a look at the centre-backs who are already injured.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all out. And they have now been joined by Fabinho and Henderson, both of whom have been used as makeshift centre-backs amidst the long list of injuries. And even then, Davies has not been able to make it onto the pitch.

Thus, there is very little chance that he will feature much when all of them are back to fitness. Thus, it is very possible that Liverpool would be willing to listen to offers in the summer. And Celtic should not think twice before making a move. Yes, it won’t be free as they had been expecting. But Davies is still a player who can make a mark at Parkhead and will be available for cheap.
