It will be a summer of change for Celtic with a number of players expected to leave and a number of new ones set to arrive in their place. But amidst all this, a familiar face might end up making his Parkhead return.
It is clear that the Hoops have not enjoyed a good season at all in their quest to lift a historic 10IAR. With those hopes up in smoke and almost a decade’s build up undone, the club will be looking to return to the top of Scottish football once again in the following campaign.
One area that they must improve in if they are to do that is between the sticks. Goalkeeping has turned out to be a huge weakness for Neil Lennon’s side. After they failed to bring back Fraser Forster, Vasilis Barkas was signed for £4.5 million but has failed to justify that investment till now. Scott Bain and Conor Hazard do not look like players who are long-term solutions either. As a result, they might have to dip into the transfer market once again.
This could see them bring back David Marshall to the club, as The Times have reported that he is on the club’s shortlist for the summer. And the player seems to be “open” to the prospect as well. But the question is, can he do a job at Celtic at 35 years of age?

David Marshall can be Celtic’s answer, but only for the short-term
He might be 35 but he remains the first-choice keeper for both club and country, and played a huge role in Scotland’s qualification the the main stage of the EUROs.
Marshall came through Celtic’s youth academy and his career highlight for the Hoops was surely that performance against FC Barcelona. But it has been over a decade since he left for down South, where he has carved out a very respectable career over the Premier League and the Championship.
Now, to be honest, he can still do a job at Parkhead. Especially with our current set of keepers. But he is not a long-term solution. And sooner or later, the club will have to sign a new goalkeeper if Barkas does not find his form.
