Celtic made one of their biggest mistakes ever in the summer

There are some opportunities that come once in a decade. The chance to sign Ivan Toney from Peterborough United was one of those opportunities for Celtic.

The player himself was very interested in moving to Parkhead but ultimately, did not get his move when the club decided not to meet the League One side’s asking price for the striker. In hindsight, it might be one of the biggest mistakes they have ever made.

Toney has gone on to be an absolute superstar in the Championship since joining Brentford. With 10 games left to be played, he only needs 9 more goal involvements to create the record for most goal involvements in a single Championship season.

That’s the kind of player that Celtic allowed to walk away from them, when the opportunity was there to pick him up if they wanted to do so. Instead, they went out and signed Albian Ajeti from West Ham United in a £5 million deal.

Celtic chose Ajeti over Toney

Ajeti is looking like a player who probably can’t get it done for the Hoops. He made a great start to his career at Parkhead but has massively fallen off since then, with only 6 goals to his name till now. And it is hard to justify the investment that the club made for him.

Toney on the other hand ended up joining Brentford in a deal that could end up costing them £10 million after add-ons. That is probably one of the best bargains they have ever had to be honest.

The English striker has scored 24 goals and provided 9 assists in 30 Championship appearances this season. Remarkable stats in a very tough league!

Clearly he could have been a long-term replacement for Odsonne Edouard, who looks set to leave the club in the summer. In fact, he might be even better than the Frenchman. And at £10 million, the Hoops would have made a significant profit in a future transfer. Instead, they shelled out that money for Ajeti and Barkas.
