In a season where Celtic have been quickly knocked out of Cup competitions and find themselves 18 points behind the Rangers in the league table, it is safe to say that not too many players have stood out for the club.
But even then, there have been a few silver linings in a cloud full of dark clouds. David Turnbull has clearly been the brightest of them. But Stephen Welsh’s performances when given a chance deserve mention as well.
The academy star has slotted in nicely into the team and even earned the Man of the Match against Motherwell. But then he would have to be stretchered off in the very next game, against St Mirren.
Naturally, there were fears that the emerging star could be out for a considerable length of time and this could end up being bad for his development going forward. But that has turned out not to be the case. In fact, he was pictured training before the St Johnstone game and although he was not included in the squad, the signs are promising. And according to Football Insider, Frank McAvennie seems to be of the same view:
"“I am relieved that it is not as bad as first feared.“I didn’t think it looked that bad in real time but when you see it after in slow motion you think, ‘Wow. This could be bad’.“But he is a young boy so he will recover quickly and hopefully he will not be out for too long.”"

Celtic must use Welsh going forward
There is a lack of quality centre-back options at Celtic right now. Kristoffer Ajer is the only one who has managed to do well on a consistent basis. Other than that, the depth is very thin.
Christopher Jullien is out injured for the foreseeable future while Shane Duffy looks like a mistake waiting to happen whenever he plays. Thus, Welsh deserves to play as much as possible moving forward.
Of course, Neil Lennon has the habit of sticking with tried-and-tested players even when they are not doing well. We have seen that in the case of Scott Brown and Ismaila Soro, as the Ivorian finds himself back on the bench despite a string of good performances while the captain is back playing three games a week once again. Hopefully the same does not happen with Welsh.
