At the start of the season, many would have expected the Rangers to put up a fight. But nobody could have seen Celtic’s disastrous season coming, especially with 10IAR on the line. This was their chance of creating history, instead it will always be remembered for the wrong reasons.

Of course, the lion’s share of the blame must fall on the shoulders of Neil Lennon. The manager has just failed to get the best out of this team and as a result, they find themselves 18 points behind the Rangers, with the league race as good as over in early January.

Most fans must be surprised that the club have not shown him the exit door yet. But despite his claims that he does not plan on leaving anytime soon, it is expected to happen come the end of the season.

Chris Sutton seems to be of the same view. Although he has defender his former teammate in the past, even he cannot see him staying beyond this season after the nightmare campaign that they have endured. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:

"“For me, Neil can’t be in charge. I don’t care whether he wins every game until the end of the season. This season has been a disaster. And I don’t like saying that as a former teammate.“When you look back to last season, it’s the same core of players, so the simple question is: Why has the level dropped off so much?“It’s the manager who carries the can and this has gone on for too long.”"

Celtic must make a change sooner or later

It is hard to argue with Sutton here and most probably would not even want to. There were questions about the appointment of Lennon when he returned for his second stint as Celtic manager after Brendan Rodgers left in the middle of the season. And unfortunately, a lot of those fears have come true.

The club are in a decent run of form right now but that does not make this season any better. The goal was always to secure 10IAR and there would have leeway in other competitions if that was done. But we all know how things have turned out.

It is important to bring a new and high profile manager in at the end of this campaign. Someone who can come in and turn things around immediately. Otherwise, it will allow the Rangers to have a decent run at the top of Scottish football.
