Ben Davies to Liverpool was one of those transfers that you never see coming. The former Preston North End defender ended up completing a late move to the Premier League champions late in January for a transfer fee reported to be around £1.6 million. The only problem is that Celtic were very interested in signing him in the summer on a free transfer and were very close to getting a pre-contract agreement done.

Clearly, that won’t be happening now, that he is at Anfield. But that does not mean that he could not be available in the summer.

It always felt like a panic buy from a team whose defence had been left severely limited due to injuries. And it is hard to see Davies forcing his way into this team even now, forget when everybody is fit.

On top of that, The Mirror are reporting that Liverpool have made Torino centre-back Bremer their number one transfer target for the summer. If they sign Ozan Kabak permanently as well when his loan deal ends at the end of the season, this will leave Davies as the sixth choice centre-back at the club.

Celtic should make a move for Davies in the summer

While Celtic were planning to get Davies for free in the summer, that won’t happen now. But they can try to test Liverpool’s resolve by launching a bid similar to what they paid Preston North End to secure the signature of the defender.

That might very well do the trick as it does not look like Davies has a long-term future at Anfield and was only brought in as defensive cover in case more players at the back went down with injury. It would not be surprising though if they are willing to get him off their books just a few months later.

At the end of the day, the move could even end up being a positive for Celtic, if Davies does manage to improve further during his time at Jurgen Klopp’s side. But all this is speculation for the moment and the important thing for now is to finish the season strong and then worry about summer targets.
