With the financial impact of the pandemic, Celtic had to depend on loan deals to do their transfer business in the summer, although that was not a rare occurrence even before the global pandemic.

As a result, we saw Shane Duffy and Diego Laxalt arrive on season-long loan spells from Brighton and Hove Albion and AC Milan respectively. Mohamed Elyounoussi’s stay was also extended by another season.

Since then, we have also seen Jonjoe Kenny arrive on loan from Everton in order to fill the void left behind by Jeremie Frimpong’s departure.

The results of these loan spells have been mixed and to be honest, none of them have managed to impress to the point where the Hoops should be desperate to keep hold of them beyond this season although it is still early days for Kenny. But it looks like the club are interested in signing Laxalt on a permanent basis, as reported by Milan News (via Sport Witness).

Celtic want to sign Laxalt permanently

The Uruguayan made a great start to his time at Parkhead but has faded away since then. And now, it looks like Greg Taylor is ahead of him in the left-back pecking order.

Thus, it is confusing why the board would want to sign him on a permanent basis, especially since he is not expected to be available for cheap. While he is good at carrying the ball forward, there are question marks about him on both ends of the pitch.

Defensively, he is suspect at getting caught out of position occasionally. While on the attack, his delivery into box leaves a lot to be desired.

Thus, would it not make more sense for the club to go after a left-back who can be a considered an upgrade on Taylor instead of someone who is struggling to keep him out of the starting XI?
