After the season that Celtic have endured, it is safe to say that most fans are surprised that Neil Lennon is still the man in charge at Parkhead. And while he has insisted on multiple occasions that he has no plans of leaving anytime soon, you would have to feel that the change will come at the end of the campaign.

Peter Lawwell is set to retire from his role, which he has held for almost two decades, and he will be replaced by Dominic McKay. One has to suspect that that is the reason why they have not made any big changes yet, because they want to give the new Chief Executive the chance to do so.

When he does come in though, the first thing on his to-do list must be to find a new manager. And a number of names have been linked with the job over the past couple of months.

Eddie Howe and Rafa Benitez have been talked about a lot. While former Chelsea boss, Frank Lampard, could also be a viable option. Andre Villas-Boas is a free agent at the moment as well while the name of John Terry has also been floated. The ultimate answer might be a lot closer to home though.

Steve Clarke is the new favourite for the Celtic job

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Steve Clarke is the new favourite to replace Neil Lennon at Parkhead. And while that might not be the blockbuster appointment like that of some of the names mentioned previously, it is hard to question the man’s abilities.

Clarke has worked as assistant manager under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Kenny Dalglish and Roberto Di Matteo in the past. And he had a very impressive spell as Kilmarnock boss, which saw them finish third and bag him Manager of the Year honours.

He has also managed to take the Scotland national team to the EUROs, which will be played after this season. And following that, there is a real possibility that he might take over at Parkhead. And while there might be questions about the style of football his teams play, there is no doubt that it is extremely effective.
