When Shane Duffy moved to Celtic, he was expected to take Scottish football by storm and establish himself as one of the best defenders in the league. After all, he was a proven talent in the Premier League and a fan of the Hoops who was coming to help secure 10IAR for the club.

Things could not have gone any worse after that. As things stand, Celtic sit 21 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership table with all hopes of 10IAR gone. And Duffy’s move has not worked out at all, as he has looked like a defensive mistake waiting to happen. So much so that even with Christopher Jullien out injured, he cannot nail down his spot in the starting XI.

The Republic of Ireland international’s confidence looks completely shattered. It must be especially tough for him as he grew up as a fan of the club and must have come with dreams of being a 10IAR hero but it has turned out to be a nightmare instead.

Alan Rough believes that the club’s problems lie deeper than just Duffy and he pointed out at the shaky end to their 2-1 win over Motherwell as proof. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:

"“I think we are all scratching our heads about how this hasn’t worked.“We all seen the credentials of him as a club player and an international player more than anything else, but I can’t remember him having any particular game that he was a stand-out.“On Saturday it was the same old story. 2-0 and coasting with loads and loads of chance and all of a sudden the goals go in.“For the last 10 minutes it was just one big panic.”"

Celtic certainly have their problems at the back

It is clear that it is not just about Duffy. The Hoops have had their problems at the back for quite some time now. In fact, he was brought in to tackle their problems from last season when up against physical forwards.

In hindsight, the duo of Jullien and Ajer is the best that club have at their disposal right now. But the Frenchman’s continuous injury issues will be a worry going forward. As a result, they must sign a new centre-back in the near future.

The full-backs deserve their fair share of the blame as well though. Neither Diego Laxalt nor Greg Taylor have done spectacularly. Both Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed have left the club. And it is too early to judge how good Jonjoe Kenny really is.
