It is no secret that Celtic were close to getting a pre-contract deal for Ben Davies over the line. But they might have sabotaged themselves in that attempt which saw the defender switch to Liverpool instead when the Premier League champions came calling for his services in late January.
At one point of time, it had looked like The Hoops had managed to agree a deal with Davies which would see him move to Parkhead for free at the end of the season when his contract with Preston North End ran out.
As reported by the Irish Mirror, the club were insistent on including a ‘break clause’ in the contract, which means that they would be able to pull out of the deal if Davies ended up getting injured.
Naturally, the defender was a bit hesitant at signing quickly and when the Liverpool opportunity presented itself, there was only one choice he was going to make. And thus, Celtic ended up missing out on another long-term transfer target.

Celtic could end up regretting the failed Ben Davies move for a long time
With the centre-back issues at Parkhead right now, it would have made sense for the club to go out and sign Davies on a permanent basis. He was available for very little and joined Liverpool for a deal worth up to just £1.6 million.
The former Preston North End man was rated as one of the best defenders in the Championship and could have been a massive signing for the Hoops. Instead, all they are left with now is a number of what-ifs.
This could go down as another massive transfer mistake on the part of Celtic if Davies ends up doing well at Anfield. Unfortunately, it won’t be the first that The Hoops have tried to get too much out of a move and ended up with nothing instead.
