Celtic legend and current captain Scott Brown was full of praise for outgoing Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell.

Celtic announced Peter Lawwell’s plans to retire in June of 2021. This will conclude his role as CEO that he has held since 2003, over which he has overseen 29 trophies. He will be replaced by Dominic McKay, who will be leaving his role with Scottish Rugby Union.

But what is Peter Lawwell’s legacy at Parkhead?

Here is what Celtic captain Scott Brown had to say about the announcement:

"“It’s very sad. The lads loved Peter. He’s done fantastic over the years for the club. He’s made us into the success that we’ve been, for the last nine years especially. He’s won trophy after trophy and he’s gave his life to the club the last 20-odd years. Peter loves this club more than anyone.”"

Brown, who is five matches shy of 600 appearances Celtic appearances, has won it all since signing in May of 2007. The skipper has also had his personal struggles in his time at Parkhead:

"“I’ve had a couple of family issues as well and Peter’s been there for me. He knows what it is to lose family members and stuff like that. He was the first on the phone to myself and that’s the things that I will remember Peter about. Those little small things that nobody else knew. He picks up the phone in hard times, he chats you through it, he gives you time off if you need it or he is willing to meet you at Celtic Park or Lennoxtown, whatever is easiest for you.”"

What will Peter Lawwell be remembered as by the Celtic fans?

While the stubbornness to finally get to this decision is obviously frustrating, it is good to know some clarity of the situation. Based on Brown’s comments Lawwell will be remembered well by many of the players and staff, and rightfully so considering how much he seemed to care about the players.

While Lawwell currently doesn’t sit in good standing with many amongst the club’s support, only time will tell what his reputation will be. With cooler heads, will he be remembered as the man that delivered 29 trophies or the man that failed to secure 10IAR?

This season certainly has been a changing of the guard. Brown has taken up a role on the bench rather than on the pitch and now Lawwell will be out at the summer. The next major move will be the manager, its just a matter of time now.
