Celtic have taken a financial hit after allowing Hatem Abd Elhamed to return to Israel as he had failed to settle down in Glasgow.

The club had signed him from Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the summer of 2019 in order to fill the void left by Mikael Lustig. And he had managed to impress in his early appearances for the Hoops, as it looked like he was going to be the new starting right-back for Neil Lennon.

His injury issues and the meteoric rise of Jeremie Frimpong saw him quickly lose his place in the team though. And it looks like his issues settling down in Scotland also had a lot to do with his performances taking a downturn over time.

He had been forced to leave his young family back in Israel and it was clearly taking a toll on his personal life. And the club have allowed him to return to his native country on a permanent basis.

Celtic have made the right decision

In fact, they have even taken a financial hit in the course of doing so. The Hoops had signed Elhamed for a transfer fee reported to be around £1.6 million from Hapoel Be’er Sheva but have managed to recoup only £800,000 of that as he returns to his former club, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

It is unfortunate how Elhamed’s career turned out at Celtic. He clearly had the talent and the ability to succeed for the club, as shown by his early performances. But injuries and issues off the pitch meant that he could never quite reach his potential.

The club have made the right decision to let him go though and should be commended for not standing in his way or holding out for a larger fee. We would like to thank him for his time at Parkhead and wish him at the best for his future.
